An actress and singer known for her work in film, television, and on stage, Shirley Mae Jones (1934– ) has captivated generations with her sparkling soprano voice and timeless beauty. During a career that spanned more than six decades, she starred in over 30 movies, including three legendary musicals, and she gained pop culture success on a hit TV series.
Jones was born in the Washington County town of Charleroi and spent most of her childhood in Smithton, in Westmoreland County. At 17, she was crowned “Miss Pittsburgh,” and she made some of her earliest stage appearances in Pittsburgh Playhouse and Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera productions.
The young actress gained fame when she was selected by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein to star in the 1955 film version of their Broadway triumph Oklahoma! Over the next few years, her leading performances in Carousel and The Music Man solidified her place as a luminary in the annals of great American movie musicals. Cast against type, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her dramatic role in the 1960 film Elmer Gantry.
Jones later became widely known as Shirley Partridge, the mother in the popular 1970s TV series The Partridge Family. She continued to work in TV, film, and on Broadway into the 21st century and remains today an American entertainment treasure.
